Yesterday I mentioned that urushi is also medium for artistic expression. Urushi art was once sought after by many of the European nobility. As the beautiful book "Japanese Export Lacquer 1580 - 1850" mentions, many museums and palaces in Europe house Japanese lacquer cabinets, chests or coffers.
Marie Antoinette was one of the passionate collectors of Japanese urushi art. You can see some of her collections at Chateau Versailles.
